Opposing New Government Bailouts


Congressman Forbes voted against H.R.5297, which would create a new $32 billion bailout program for banks.  The legislation is meant to encourage lending to small businesses, but does not require banks to actually lend the money to businesses.
This bill passed the House by a vote of 241-182.


 
Reformed Ineffective Spending

Congressman Forbes supported the Government Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Performance Improvement Act of 2010 (H.R.2142) that will mandate periodic efficiency reviews of government programs.  This bill, which establishes a Performance Improvement Council, is a step towards curbing wasteful government spending.
This bill passed the House by a voice vote.

 
Protecting Peanut Farming in the Fourth District

Congressman Forbes joined several of his colleagues in the House in sending a letter to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT) in opposition to a proposed DOT rulemaking that would ban peanuts and peanut products from commercial airlines.
Government Reform

Opposed permanent tax increases.  Congressman Forbes voted against the Small Business Jobs Tax Relief Act of 2010 (H.R.5486), which seeks temporary tax relief for some businesses by permanently raising taxes on other industries.  This bill would result in a net increase of $3 billion of additional taxes.
This bill passed the House by a vote of 247-170.

Opposed unnecessary programs.  Congressman Forbes voted against the Work-Life Balance Award Act (H.R.4855) that would require the Department of Labor (DOL) to establish a Work-Life Balance Advisory Board to offer awards to employees who have implemented work-life balance policies.  Congressman Forbes questions this use of DOL time, energy, and resources during a time of almost 10% unemployment.
This bill failed in the House by a vote of 249-163. 

Family Values

Celebrated Father’s Day.  Congressman Forbes supported a resolution (H.Res.1389) recognizing the important role of fatherhood and encourages active involvement of fathers in the rearing and development of their children, including the devotion of time, energy, and resources.
This resolution passed the House by a vote of 416-0.

Science and Technology

Promoted interaction between policymakers and teachers.  Congressman Forbes supported a resolution (H.Res.1322) celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program, which brings science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers into the policymaking process.
This resolution passed the House by a vote of 405-5.

Energy

Encouraging renewable energy.  Congressman Forbes supported the Collinsville Renewable Energy Promotion Act (H.R.4451) that grants licenses for the construction of two hydroelectric plants in Connecticut.  These projects represent important initial steps to American energy independence.
This bill passed the House by a voice vote.

American Heritage

Celebrated the United States flag.  Congressman Forbes supported a resolution (H.Res.1429) honoring the flag of the United States and promoting the ideals of Flag Day, celebrated annually on June 14.
This resolution passed the House by a vote of 418-0.

Celebrated our historical diversity.  Congressman Forbes supported a resolution (H.Con.Res 242) recognizing the contributions of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on the Association’s 101st anniversary.
This resolution passed the House by a vote of 421-0.

Veterans

Remembered the veterans of the Korean War.  Congressman Forbes supported a resolution (H.J.Res.86) honoring the dedication and sacrifice of the United States Armed Forces and its allies that served in the Korean War 60 years ago.  This resolution also reaffirms the important alliance and bond that exists between United States and the Republic of Korea.
This resolution passed the House by a voice vote.
 
Honored the United States Army.
  Congressman Forbes supported a resolution (H.Con.Res.286) that honors the dedication and sacrifice that the members of the U.S. Army and their family have displayed over the course of 235 years.
This resolution passed the House by a voice vote.

Healthcare

Addressed the looming shortage of surgeons.  Congressman Forbes joined several of his colleagues in the House in signing a letter to the Acting Comptroller General requesting that a physician with real world expertise and firsthand knowledge of important healthcare issues be included on the newly established National Health Care Workforce Commission, which is mandated to develop an action plan aimed at recruiting and training a new physician workforce.

Education

Supported American Education Week.  Congressman Forbes supported a resolution (H.Res.879), which expresses the House of Representatives' support for the goals and ideals of American Education Week.
This resolution passed the House by a voice vote.
