Forbes Announces Press Availabilities for JFCOM Events

Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) announced the following press availabilities for upcoming events related to the Pentagon’s abrupt and closed-door decision to close the U.S. Joint Forces Command (JFCOM). Congressman Forbes will address the Department of Defense's refusal to provide information to Congress on JFCOM and other defense decisions, and how reckless spending is driving national security decisions

Meeting with the Department of Defense on JFCOM Closure

WHAT:

Meeting with Governor McDonnell, Congressman Randy Forbes, and other members of the Virginia delegation to discuss the Department of Defense’s lack of transparency in disclosing the analysis of the JFCOM decision with Congress and the affected communities in the Commonwealth.  A meeting with Secretary Gates was initially requested by Governor McDonnell on August 13, 2010 and again on September 3, 2010.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates will not attend the meeting, despite these requests from the Governor that he attend. The meeting will be attended by Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. James E. Cartwright, and Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology & Logistics, Dr. Ashton B. Carter.

House Armed Services Committee Hearing on Department of Defense Efficiency Initiatives

 

WHAT:

A House Armed Services Committee Hearing on DoD efficiency initiatives. Specific documents, opinions, and analyses related to the legalities of the JFCOM decision have been requested from the DoD. A full list of the documents requested can be found here.

The documents were supposed to be provided to Congress no later than September 10, 2010, yet none the documents, opinions, or analyses have been provided.

WHEN:

Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

WHERE:

2118 Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing may also be viewed online at http://armedservices.house.gov/
