Rogers Calls on Congress to Reform

Washington, Oct 25 - Last month, U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-05) and his Republican colleagues released A Pledge to America and called on Congress to reform itself so that the trust that has been broken with the American people can be restored.

“It is no surprise that the American people are fed up with business as usual in Washington,” said Rogers. “The time for reform is now. No longer can Congress cram through bills that they haven’t even read. No longer can Congress ignore the will of the people and pass a government take-over of health care or bailout big business with taxpayer money. Congress needs to abide by the Constitution and start listening to the people they represent. Americans shouldn’t have to serve Congress by paying higher taxes and bearing the burden of an astronomical debt; rather, Congress should serve the people and immediately rein in spending and stop making government the answer for every problem.”

In A Pledge to America, Republicans plans to restore trust by transferring power back to the people and making sure they have a say in the laws passed by Congress. The Republican plan will require legislation be made public at least three days prior to any vote. The plan would also require Congress to adhere to the Constitution, make it easier to cut spending, and advance legislative issues one at a time, instead of packaging multiple, unrelated bills together in the dark of the night.

Rogers has served Kentucky’s 5th Congressional District since 1981. With a focus on economic development, job creation, fighting illegal drugs and preserving Appalachia’s natural treasures, he has a reputation for listening to his constituents and fighting for the region he represents.
