Quote of the Day

"The U.S. economy expanded at a faster clip than initially forecast in the third quarter, helped by more robust consumer spending and by stronger exports. The economy grew at a 2.5% annualized pace in the quarter, revised up from the initial estimate of 2.0%, the government said in its second estimate of quarterly gross domestic product. GDP growth was 1.7% during the second quarter.”

CITY OF CARBONDALE AND JACKSON COUNTY RECEIVES U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE GRANT

Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the City of Carbondale and Jackson County have been awarded a $19,221 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, through the U.S. Department of Justice.  The Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program, named after New York Police Officer, Edward Byrne, who was killed by drug dealers, allows local governments to support activities to prevent and control crime based on local needs and conditions.

The City of Carbondale will use their half of the grant to improve and upgrade a records management system that links their system to the Jackson County Sheriff's office and Southern Illinois University's Police department.

Jackson County will use their half of the grant to upgrade the Sheriff's Department mobile radio capabilities. The enhanced communication will improve officer safety by providing improved radio transmissions between County patrol cars and local and state police units that monitor and provide backup to County deputies.

"These types of programs provide needed funding for additional technological tools for our law enforcement community," said Costello, a former law enforcement official.  "They should remain a priority for the federal budget."
