Quote of the Day

"The U.S. economy expanded at a faster clip than initially forecast in the third quarter, helped by more robust consumer spending and by stronger exports. The economy grew at a 2.5% annualized pace in the quarter, revised up from the initial estimate of 2.0%, the government said in its second estimate of quarterly gross domestic product. GDP growth was 1.7% during the second quarter.”

Gateway Improvements Included In Federal Transportation Bill (Illinois Congressman Jerry Costello Reveals Plans At Press Conference)

Madison, IL - Gateway International Raceway, in conjunction with U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello, today announced plans at a Press Conference held at Gateway International Raceway, for road improvement projects that will take place around the facility over the next four years.  The plans were made possible through projects released in the recently signed Federal Transportation Bill, approved by Congress and signed into law by President Bush last week.

The improvements will have a major impact on Gateway.  Among those is the widening of Old Madison Road in the City of Madison.  The road runs parallel with the track and Route 203 and is located across the street from the track by the Blue Parking Lot.  The wider road will provide a better, safer traffic flow entering and exiting the lot. Congressman Costello secured $1.6 million in the bill for this project.

The second project is the construction of a connector road between Old Collinsville Rd. to IL 3/North 1st Street.  This will provide a second entrance/exit for the facility on the backside of the track. When completed, the 1st Street extension should enable Gateway to safely and effectively manage nearly twice as much traffic as they currently have the ability to do. Costello secured $4.8 million for this project.

Costello said "these infrastructure improvement projects are important for economic development in the region. The projects at Gateway will lessen traffic congestion at the track and improve development opportunities around Gateway International."

Gateway International Raceway is owned by Dover Motorsports, Inc. and is a leading promoter of motorsports events in the United States. They operate tracks in three states, and present more than 500 motorsports events each year. This includes 15 major, national events which operate under the auspices of three of the premier sanctioning bodies in the U.S. - NASCAR, NHRA, and IRL. Dover Motorsports, Inc. also owns and operates Dover International Speedway in Dover, Del., Nashville Superspeedway near Nashville, Tenn., and Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis, Tenn.
