Congresswoman McCollum Speaks Before the Midway Chamber of Commerce In a recent speech to the Midway Chamber of Commerce, Congresswoman McCollum cited specific examples of how St. Paul has benefited from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - the federal government's emergency, short-term response to the Great Recession. So far, the Recovery Act has: protected teachers and police from layoffs; provided local businesses, nonprofits, and government entities almost $3.6 billion in grants, loans, and contracts; and secured a $35 million transportation grant so St. Paul can move forward with the reconstruction of Union Depot, which will generate 3,000 jobs between now and 2012. "This is a critical moment in the life of our country," said Congresswoman McCollum. "The challenges we face are enormous: growing budget deficits, crumbling infrastructure, climate change and clean energy, immigration reform. Each of these challenges affects the life of this community and every community. But no community can solve these problems alone. Washington must provide leadership and we need to work together because national problems demand national solutions.
