March 26, 2009 - Recovery Act Directs $22 Million to Local Military Facilities |
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Department of Defense has released its expenditure plans for funds it will distribute through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. More than 30 projects in Monterey County will be funded through Recovery Act funds. Total funds for local projects will be $21.85 million. "The Central Coast receives close to $1 billion a year in government funds for our military installations, which are a major driver of our economy," said Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel). "These construction funds will employ many local workers and will provide an injection of capital into our local economy." The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $7.4 billion in defense-related funding. The Department of Defense is directing the bulk of those funds to restoration and maintenance projects to improve, repair and modernize facilities. Another large portion of funds will be directed to construction for hospitals, with the remainder going to a variety of DoD projects. The funds will go to repair and upgrade the following facilities: Presidio of Monterey (Total: $4,798,000)
Fort Hunter-Liggett (Total: $2,370,000)
Salinas National Guard Field Maintenance Shop (Total: $1,500,000)
Camp Roberts (Total: $13,182,000)
"As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Fort Hunter Liggett has received funding to build four additional sets of family housing and one set of commander's quarters," said Col. Kevin Riedler, commander of the Combat Support Training Center. "With the increased training mission at Hunter Liggett, this funding helps provide for the soldiers who sustain that training and our nation's defense. Having again placed a commander there in 2007 to head the growing mission, this funding will also permit returning the historic hacienda commander's quarters to Morale, Welfare, and Recreation as they had been used since the previous commander departed Hunter Liggett in the 1990s." A full list of local projects is available on Rep. Farr's Web site at: http://www.farr.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=491 "Investing in these military construction projects will not only provide a stimulus effect on the economy, they improve the quality of life for our troops and military families," Rep. Farr said. "Projects range from repairing water and gas lines to modernizing the health clinic at the Presidio of Monterey, which are necessary to extend the life of our local facilities."
