| March 6, 2009 - Stimulus Includes Millions for Local Schools |

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Department of Education and the Congressional Research Service have released preliminary estimates on funds that will be directed to local schools for two major education programs. These funds are part of the economic stimulus package passed by Congress and signed by President Obama last month. Central Coast schools will receive approximately $10.5 million for Title I and $21.2 million for IDEA programs. Title I funds provide financial assistance to schools with high numbers of disadvantaged students, while funds allocated through IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) assist schools in providing services to children with disabilities. "Our state budget woes have combined with a miserable economy to really put our schools at risk," said Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel), who vigorously supported the local funds included in the stimulus bill. "We're fighting a holding battle to maintain our basic levels of service. We must make sure our schools have the funds they need to prevent teacher layoffs and keep our schools in working order." These are just two of several programs that receive funds directly from Washington through federal formulas. Details on the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund will be released soon; the fund includes large pots of money for education programs. California's share of this fund will include at least $4.9 billion to help schools prevent layoffs and update facilities. "Critics complain that debt from this recovery will swamp future generations. I say that sacrificing our current generation of students is not an acceptable alternative," said Rep. Farr. "We have the ability to rebuild our economy to reduce that debt, and that's where our efforts must be directed." Title I, IDEA estimates from the U.S. Department of Education:
