National Security
I have always voted to ensure our armed forces have the resources and training necessary to succeed on the battlefield. Our armed forces have a clear and focused goal: stop the ability of the Taliban to provide safe haven to al Qaeda, and stop al Qaeda’s use of Iraq and Afghanistan as a base of operations for terrorist activities. In short, U. S. and NATO forces must disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda. I believe that in order to achieve this goal, the United States must pursue a foreign policy that promotes security, governance, and economic development.
I believe combating terrorism and preventing another terrorist attack remain national priorities. The United States must continue its campaign against terrorists and their ideology.
On the home front, I have recently worked to pass the Grid Reliability and Infrastructure Defense (GRID) Act in the House of Representatives. In the spring of 2007, the Department of Homeland Security performed a test that demonstrated a possible vulnerability in the software controls of electric generators that could allow someone to remotely destroy a generator. The GRID Act addresses vulnerabilities to the electric grid, including cyber attacks or an electromagnetic pulse that could pose a substantial risk of disruption to the bulk-power system. The measure also addresses the potential of terrorists hacking into the control system connected to the electric grid and causing severe physical damage to the equipment.
