Slaughter Announces $157,960 Grant for Childcare at Monroe Community College Funding will Support Childcare Services for Low Income Students
Washington, DC - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-Fairport), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Education's Child Care Program has awarded $157,960 to Monroe Community College's Child Care Center. The grant will fund 40 additional subsidized childcare slots for low-income students, making it possible for their parents, who would otherwise be unable to afford childcare, to have the time to obtain a postsecondary education.
"A college education should be accessible to anyone who desires it," Rep. Slaughter said. "By taking care of their children while they are in school, organizations like the Child Care Center are helping to provide a tremendous benefit to hard-working parents that will change their lives, and change the lives of their families, for the better," she added.
The Monroe Community College Child Care Center has provided hundreds of low-income students with childcare services over the past 14 years. The Department of Education funding it has received will nearly double the number of low-income students it serves.
The Department of Education's Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) Program helps low-income parents to obtain a postsecondary education by providing campus-based childcare services for their children.
