Slaughter Announces Five Grants to District Fire Companies Totaling $426,778 Funding Goes Toward Operations, Safety, and Vehicles for Firefighters
Washington, DC - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-Fairport), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, is pleased to announce that the 2005 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has awarded grants to the Fairport Fire Department and the Brighton Fire District in Monroe County, and to the Miller Hose Company, Olcott Fire Company, and Lewiston Fire Company #1 in Niagara. The funding, totaling $426,778, will be used to pay for essential training and equipment necessary for district firefighters to do their jobs safely and successfully.
"There is nothing more important than ensuring the security of the brave men and women who risk their lives for our welfare," Rep. Slaughter said. "I am thrilled that they will now have the resources necessary to continue protecting our communities," she added. "Firefighters deserve our gratitude, our support, and all the funds they need to do their jobs effectively and to protect themselves in the process."
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is administered jointly by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness (SLGCP) and the United State's Fire Administration. This year, the program will award $650 million to fire departments across the country in the form of one-year grants. The grants are channeled through either the Operations and Firefighter Safety Program, which supports training, equipment, wellness, fitness, and improvements to fire stations, or the Firefighting Vehicle Acquisition Program.
