Rep. Slaughter: Huther-Doyle Grant Gives Hope to Troubled Youth Slaughter Joins Rochester Community Leaders at Press Conference to Celebrate Grant
Washington, DC - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, (D-Fairport), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, joined Sgt. Brett Sobieraski, President of the Huther-Doyle Board of Directors, Robert Lebman, Executive Director of Huther-Doyle, and other Rochester community leaders at a press conference this morning.
The event recognized the work of Huther-Doyle, an addiction services and rehabilitation center, and it will announce the $1.8 million grant given to the organization over a four-year period by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Slaughter commended Huther-Doyle "for its long-standing reputation for excellence in the area of substance abuse services," and focused on the Project No Return program, which will be funded by the grant.
Project No Return will provide discharge planning, case management and support services to 220 convicted offenders who are transitioning into society from the Monroe County Correctional Facility.
"A recent study of crime victims in the City of Rochester revealed that one of the most powerful deterrents to crime among our youth is helping young people to reconnect to their futures," said Rep. Slaughter at the press conference. She continued, "The study indicated that this goal would only be accomplished by incorporating five critical elements into a young person's transformational experiences."
Slaughter added, "These elements require establishing positive relationships and networks; high expectations and clear standards; opportunities for meaningful participation and contribution; challenging experiences, and high quality instruction and training."
She concluded, "I congratulate Huther-Doyle on winning this grant and wish the Institute continued success."
