Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) marked National Library Week (April 11-17) by reminding residents of the resources available through local and national libraries.

“Libraries, through their branch locations and online services, provide an abundance of free learning and entertainment opportunities,” said Congressman Higgins. “Library Week is a reminder to take a new look of the latest resources available to us all.”

Library of Congress

Located in Washington, DC, the Library of Congress was established by an act of Congress in 1800. It is the largest library in the world with a collection of over 145 million items. The Library of Congress website, www.loc.gov, includes a vast digital collection available online that includes links to photographs, manuscripts, maps, sound recordings, motion pictures, books and Web sites. The Library’s most recent acquisition is the entire Twitter archive. Another resource provided by the Library of Congress is www.thomas.gov which provides current and historical information on legislation considered by Congress.

Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System

The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system operates 37 branches within the City of Buffalo and Erie County. The branches offer traditional resources as well as movie and music collections and events for families and seniors. The Library’s website, www.buffalolib.org, also provides a multitude of information, including health and career resources, reference materials, computer training and audio downloads.

Chautauqua-Cattaragus Library System

The Chautauqua-Cattaragus Library website, www.cclslib.org, includes links to the more than 20 branches across the County, providing individualized branch hours, events and resources.

Congressman Higgins recently announced $9.5 million in Recovery Act funding to expand broadband service and computer access in 30 libraries across New York State including branches in Dunkirk and Jamestown.
