- Rep. Petri at the National Youth Art Month Flag Event
On March 25, 2010, the Council for Art Education's National Youth Art Month Flag Event held a reception in the Library of Congress for K-12 participants in a national Youth Art Month flag design program. Each participating state selected one design to represent that state and the creative spirit of Youth Art Month. Selected for Wisconsin was the design of Berlin High School 11th grader Rachel Huettl, who attended the reception and discussed her flag with Rep. Petri.

- Petri and Wisconsin's Middle Level Principal of the Year
Wisconsin's Middle Level Principal of the Year, Kathy Lemberger, met with Rep. Tom Petri in Washington Oct. 15 to discuss education issues. Lemberger, the principal of Washington Junior High School in Manitowoc, was on Capitol Hill as part of the MetLife/National Association of Secondary School Principals National Principal of the Year Program.

- Petri and the Dairy Caucus
The newly-reconstituted House Dairy Caucus met with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Oct. 1 to discuss the current serious problems faced by dairy farmers. Caucus Vice Chair Tom Petri said that they urged the Secretary to redouble the Executive Branch's efforts to provide price stabilization programs and to modernize the dairy price support program which, Petri said, "is totally inadequate to today's circumstances."

- Petri Supports Making Legislation Available Online
Rep. Petri explains why he has cosponsored H. Res. 554 and has signed a discharge petition to help force the House leadership to bring it to the floor of the House for a vote. H. Res. 554 would require the House leadership to make the full text of legislation available on the Web at least 72 hours before bringing it to the floor for consideration. This would give lawmakers and the general public time to consider bills before they are brought up for a vote.

- Petri and The National Direct Student Loan Coalition
On Sept. 21, several leading members of the The National Direct Student Loan Coalition (NDSLC) stopped by Rep. Tom Petri's office to thank him for his work in defense of Direct Lending. Tom Butts, retired from the University of Michigan and now an advisor to the NDSLC, said Rep. Petri will be proud of his work on student loans for the rest of his career, and that his descendants will as well.

At a press conference Sept. 15, 2009 with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others, Rep. Petri discussed H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009. This bill will eliminate the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program (aka "guaranteed loans") in favor of the vastly more cost-effective Direct Loan program, which Petri has championed since 1983.

At an Education and Labor Committee meeting July 21, 2009, held to complete work on H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009, Rep. Petri praised the bill's provisions designed to end the Federal Family Education Loan program in favor of the Direct Loan program.

- Petri's Health Care Amendment
The House Education and Labor Committee considered amendments to a massive health care overhaul. At 9:54 pm, Rep. Petri called attention to the need to protect consumer-driven plans such as Health Savings Accounts coupled with low-premium high deductible plans which have proved highly popular with consumers, and have been a great success for the employees of Manitowoc County, among other employers. After a long night's work of considering amendments, at about 5 a.m., the Committee agreed to Rep. Petri's amendment protecting consumer-directed plans.
