Social Security & Retirement Security

Issues Alert: Partisan group using shameful scare tactics against Iowa Seniors mischaracterizing Congressman Tom Latham’s stance on Social Security.

"I firmly believe that Social Security is a unique contract between you and the government.  It is a contract that must and will be honored by the government without question."

Social Security is safe and viable for current and near retirees.

The long-term outlook for the Social Security benefits of the younger workers of today is in jeopardy.  We need to make common sense reforms to the program that will ensure that the program is viable for many generations to come.

One of the proposals Congressman Latham has always supported is that of allowing younger workers the ability to have a list of options, provided by the Social Security Administration, in how a portion of their mandatory Social Security contributions could be saved.  One option that Congressman Latham supports is allowing voluntary participation in Social Security investment options that have traditionally received a higher percentage return in the long run.

There is no proposal by Congress that would privatize Social Security.  Beware of partisan groups using scare tactics to claim that there is a plan to privatize Social Security.  They are wrong, and they know it.

For the record, Congressman Latham:

  • Firmly believes that Social Security is a unique contract between you and the federal government — a contract that must and will be honored by the government without question.
  • Will never vote to privatize Social Security or Medicare
  • Will never vote to cut Social Security benefits for current or near retirees
  • Is opposed to privatizing Social Security or Medicare
  • Will fight any attempts to cut benefits for current seniors or near retirees
  • Will oppose — and fight against — any increases in Social Security payroll taxes
  • Is opposed to the government investing Social Security funds in the stock market
  • Will only support Social Security reform plans that preserve disability and survivor benefits
  • Is opposed to raising the retirement age
