Navy SEALs Cleared of All Charges (May 2010) Print

I’m pleased to report that the three Navy SEALs charged with mistreating a top terrorist they helped capture in Iraq have been found not guilty of all charges. The quick acquittals of Petty Officer Jonathan Keefe, Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe confirmed that the charges against these elite sailors were unsupported by the facts as many suspected from the beginning. I hope these young men can resume their military careers and service to our nation unfazed by the baseless charges they faced. While all of our servicemembers must adhere to the rules of engagement established by their commanders, I believe the military has a duty to make sure they have strong evidence before pursuing such charges against our troops in the future. The failure to do so could jeopardize the military careers of our men and women in uniform and discourage them from aggressively engaging our enemies and sufficiently protecting themselves against potential attack—results that would be entirely unacceptable and harmful to our security.
