Congressional Page Program

Pages are juniors in high school who serve as support staff for the U.S. House of Representatives. They come to Washington, D.C. to live, work and study as Pages. The program includes the House Page School, the House Page Residence Hall and work responsibilities within the House of Representatives.

Currently seventy-two young men and women are appointed by their Member of Congress, to serve as Pages in the U.S. House of Representatives. Twenty-four slots per session are reserved for Republican Pages. Republican Members of Congress are selected by the Republican Leader's office to receive a Page on a rotating basis, based on when the office last appointed a page.

To be qualified to serve as a Republican Page, all applicants must: 1) be a citizen of the United States of America, 2) reside in the state the nominating Member of Congress represents, 3) be at least 16 years of age, but not yet 18 years of age, 4) be in, or entering, the 11th Grade (summer applicants may be entering or concluding 11th grade), 5) have a cumulative grade point average of a "B" or better (3.0 or 80/100, unweighted) in the five major subject areas, 6) have health insurance. Applicants not meeting the above criteria will not be considered.

Completed applications must be submitted to the sponsoring Member of Congress for review and possible recommendation. Completed applications will include: two official school transcripts, school report prepared by the school guidance counselor, signed parental consent and information forms, two essays, a resume of extra-curricular activities and three letters of recommendation.

Members of Congress will review completed applications, select a final candidate and then forward the materials to the Republican Leader's office along with a certification form and letter of support. The Republican Leader's office will only consider applications that are submitted by a Republican Member of Congress.

If accepted into the Page Program, students are required to live at the Page Residence Hall under the supervision of a director, assistant director, and proctors who reside on the premises. The triple rooms are furnished with twin beds, dressers, desks, and chairs. Each of the rooms has a closet, a study area, toll-controlled telephone, private bathroom, and air-conditioning. Community areas include a living room with color television, a kitchen and pantry, laundry room, study room, computer room, and fitness room, all located on the premises.

Pages are paid while employed by the U.S. House of Representatives. Automatic deductions are made for federal and state taxes, social security and the residence hall fee. Pages are responsible for the cost of transportation to and from Washington as well as the uniform. A one-time refundable security deposit of $100 is required for the dorm.

Pages are employees of the U.S. House of Representatives, Office of the Clerk, and are an important part of the legislative process. Before making a decision to become a Page, it must be understood that all family activities, as well as home school and community activities, which would interrupt Page School and/or work activities, must be put on hold until the term concludes.

Questions about the House Page Program should be directed to the Office of the Clerk at (202) 225-7000.

Applicants from the 6th District of Wisconsin should contact Congressman Petri's Office (1-800-242-4883) with questions about sponsorship. They should return their completed applications by November 5, 2010 to Congressman Tom Petri, 490 W. Rolling Meadows Drive, Fond du Lac, WI 54937.
