Federal Funds for Manitowoc Project Announced

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Herb Kohl today announced that $450,000 in federal funding secured in the federal budget to strengthen Manitowoc's local economy by drawing more tourists to the region was released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Kohl, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, had secured the funding as part of the fiscal year 2004 budget.

"This is a good investment that will promote economic development and help give Manitowoc residents a return on their tax dollars. I am confident that this funding will help bring more tourists to Manitowoc, and inject money into the local economy," Kohl said.

Rep. Tom Petri said, "Manitowoc has a lot to offer visitors, and this money will help us to bring tourists in to strengthen the local economy and create jobs. I'm happy to have worked with Sen. Kohl and Mayor Crawford to bring this money home to our area."

The City of Manitowoc will direct the funding to develop a program to bring greater attention to the region as a tourist destination. The pro-active initiative to encourage tourists to visit the community is a response to a growing economic threat, including a series of plant closings. The program would promote the many features of Manitowoc, including its beaches, parks, and historic sites.
