City of Juneau Fire Department Wins Grant

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Tom Petri reports that the City of Juneau Fire Department will receive a $129,900 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The funds will be used to purchase new protective clothing, including helmets and boots, and to replace aging portable breathing equipment for use in heavy smoke.

"This grant is truly a godsend to receive, and we can't say thank you enough to the government for offering this grant," said fire department 1st Lieutenant David Beal, who further noted that most small fire departments usually have only $2,000 to $6,000 per year for the type of equipment covered by the grant.

"We ask a lot more of fire departments than we used to," said Petri. "Big cities and small villages all require modern, professional equipment to keep us safer. I want to congratulate the Juneau Fire Department for succeeding with its grant application to this highly competitive program."
