Petri Receives Award from Bicyclists

WASHINGTON – At a Capitol Hill event March 4, Cong. Tom Petri received an award from the League of American Bicyclists in recognition of his successful effort last September to protect funding for transportation enhancements such as bicycle and pedestrian paths, downtown streetscapes, scenic highways, tourist welcome centers, historic preservation and wildlife crossings.

Elissa Margolin, the League's executive director explained, "We give this award to a leader in Congress who has displayed an enormous contribution to promoting 'cycling on the national level. It was Cong. Petri who knew the value in the enhancements program - knew that bicycle trails and sidewalks and other transportation enhancements were improving the quality of life, and helped lead the initiative towards restoring that at the final vote on the House floor."

Petri said that in the transportation proposals currently being considered in Congress he was working to maintain a balanced program which considered pedestrians and bicyclists.

He added, "Recreation is terribly important for Wisconsin, we are a leader in the nation in biking, with the two biggest bike companies in America headquartered in Wisconsin. People come from all over the country to experience the rural roads of Wisconsin and our trails. So this is important for our economic future as well."
