Ada Fire Department Receives Federal Grant

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Tom Petri reports that the Ada Fire Department has received an $80,750 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

When informed of the grant, Ada Fire Department Lt./Training Officer Todd Hittman said, "That helps us out a lot."

Hittman explained that the fire department would use the funds to construct a tanker truck. He said, "We got a really good deal on a used chasse, then we had it sitting in storage" while trying to raise additional funds. The grant will enable the fire department to get the chasse "up to the builders to finish it."

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program awards one- year grants directly to local fire departments, enhancing their abilities to respond to fire and fire-related hazards in their communities.

"We ask a lot more of fire departments than we used to - not simply fire fighting but also fire prevention, safety programs, emergency medical services and even terrorist threats," said Petri. "These grants are meant to help local communities cope with the added expenses in order to keep us all safer."
