Petri, Kohl, Feingold, Kagen to Meet With NewPage CEO

WASHINGTON - On Wednesday, September 24, 2008, Congressman Tom Petri will join Senators Herb Kohl and Russell Feingold and Congressman Steve Kagen at a Capitol Hill meeting with NewPage Corporation CEO Mark Suwyn.

The legislators requested the meeting to discuss future plans for the Kimberly Mill which NewPage permanently closed on September 8.  They plan to engage Mr. Suwyn in a conversation about bringing papermaking back to Kimberly, the possibility of a third party purchase of the mill, and ways in which the congressional delegation can be helpful in bringing about these results.

"I'm going to advocate for our local employees and their families.  From everything I've heard, the Kimberly mill has every prospect of being successful if a company can be found that wants to run it.  NewPage should be open to selling the mill and letting everybody get back to work," said Petri.

“We want to pursue every option for getting the Kimberly mill workforce employed again, for preserving the jobs at NewPage’s other Wisconsin facilities, and for improving market conditions for domestic paper companies.  Working together, I hope we can make some progress,” Kohl said.

“The Kimberly workforce is highly trained and has been commended for the great work it has done,” Feingold said.  “Given Kimberly’s terrific workforce and the good condition the plant is in, we will ask New Page to consider alternatives to closing the mill, including operating the mill or selling it to someone who will take advantage of the assets Kimberly has to offer.  I look forward to working with the rest of the delegation to do all we can on behalf of the hard-working people in Kimberly.”

Congressman Kagen said, “We are working hard together to convince NewPage and the International Trade Commission to reverse their decisions and allow the Kimberly community to continue producing the finest paper available.”
