Rep. Petri has issued the following statement:
"I am distressed to hear of the announced closing of the NewPage mill in Kimberly. This is very sad news for the employees affected and their families. I am in the process of contacting the appropriate officials in order to make sure that the displaced workers get every bit of help to which they are entitled, and I will be working to help provide those workers with 100 percent of the information they need."
Earlier this year, Rep. Petri had written to the U.S. International Trade Commission questioning its decision that rising paper imports did not harm domestic producers.
Petri also met with NewPage President Mark Suwyn on Feb. 25, 2008, to discuss benefits for employers displaced by earlier closings and NewPage's plans for remaining facilities. "There was no indication at the meeting that there were plans to close the Kimberly mill in its entirety. Everyone has been caught totally off guard by this most recent announcement," Petri said.
