Congressman Tom Petri says the Internal Revenue Service has been unable to deliver 2,600 economic stimulus checks in Wisconsin totaling $1.4 million and 960 regular refund checks totaling $727,000, all of which were returned by the U.S. Postal Service due to address errors.
"Anybody still waiting for an expected refund or a stimulus payment should check with the IRS immediately. Go to IRS.gov and click on 'Claim Your Undelivered Tax Refund or Stimulus Check,'" said Petri. "I also have a list of 430 households in the 6th Congressional District to which the IRS has tried unsuccessfully to deliver money. That's on my Web site at http://petri.house.gov.
Nationally, the IRS is looking for taxpayers missing more than 279,000 economic stimulus checks totaling $163 million and more than 104,000 regular refund checks totaling $103 million that were all sent back as undeliverable.
"It is crucial that taxpayers who may be due a stimulus check get their proper addresses to the IRS by Nov. 28. By law, the stimulus checks must be mailed by the end of the year," said Petri. "In Wisconsin, the average undelivered payment is $527. The average undelivered refund is $756. I don't think anybody will want to just let this slide."
