Many Dodge County property owners were recently surprised to learn that they will be required to purchase flood insurance if a flood plain map revised earlier this year by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) doesn't change.
"Some residents say the maps are wrong and should be corrected," said Rep. Tom Petri. "There is a lot at stake because the insurance is costly, but so is the process of proving it's unnecessary. Challenging the maps requires property owners to gather substantial engineering data."
In response, Petri has helped to arrange a meeting between Fox Lake residents, FEMA representatives, and officials from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The agency representatives will discuss the technical and engineering data necessary to bring about a change in the flood maps as well as describing to interested residents the steps involved in making a case to FEMA.
The meeting will take place at 1:30 pm on Friday, August 6 at the Fox Lake Town Hall at W10543 County Road F. The agenda will include technical requirements for map revisions and the process for requesting revisions. FEMA and DNR staff will be available following the meeting to answer individual questions.
