WASHINGTON - Rep. Petri made the following comment about the President's State of the Union Address: (Audio of full comments or text transcript)
"The President, obviously, had a modest agenda because he is in the last year of his administration. But, we have been working hard in the Education Committee, trying to see if we can't make improvements in 'No Child Left Behind,' and get that reauthorization to the President.
"There are a number of other initiatives that probably won't go anywhere in this Congress. One important one is the making permanent of the tax rates that were established by Congress back in the beginning of the century. If we don't do that, it could create economic uncertainty and a slowdown in the economy as rates are significantly increased.
"And the fact of the matter is that with the lower rates last year, the deficit declined appreciably because the economy was strong and companies were paying record amounts in taxes."
