WASHINGTON - The National Breast Cancer Coalition, a grassroots advocacy group, reports that Rep. Tom Petri had a perfect voting record against breast cancer last year, earning him a Certificate of Excellence from the NBCC.
The group's interim 2007 Congressional Record of Support for NBCC's Priorities focused on four legislative priorities: guaranteed access to quality health care for all; funding of $150 million for the Department of Defense (DOD) peer-reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP); enactment of the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (H.R.1157/S.579) which would establish a national strategy for investigating the impact of environmental factors on the development of breast cancer; and preservation of the Medicaid Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program, which provides Medicaid coverage to low-income, uninsured women screened and diagnosed with breast cancer through a federal program.
"Medical science is moving forward rapidly, and I see a positive prognosis for the years ahead. Until the challenges of breast cancer have been fully overcome, further research and proper care for low-income patients is both the cost-effective approach and simply the right thing to do," said Petri.
