Rep. Tom Petri has announced that Oshkosh West High School senior Kimberly Powell is the winner of the Congressman's annual 6th Congressional District art contest, as judged by a panel of area artists. Powell's winning submission is an oil painting of two young women entitled "Shift."
Petri's contest is in conjunction with the 27th Annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students, called An Artistic Discovery.
The Competition, sponsored by members of Congress through contests held in their various congressional districts, affords creative high school students the opportunity to showcase their talents in Washington, D.C. The first-place artwork chosen in each congressional district will be sent to Washington to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. The winning artist is invited to a reception in Washington on June 25 and in addition will receive scholarship opportunities from the Savannah College of Art & Design.
"Ms. Powell is highly talented, and we will be privileged to have her piece representing us in the Capitol during the coming year," said Petri. "I only regret that we have to let go of the previous winner's work."
The 2007 winner was Mai Koua Yang of Sheboygan North High School.
The second place winner for 2008 is Oshkosh West High School senior Jordin Baas, whose artwork, "Stickboy," is rendered in acrylic paint. Her artwork will be displayed in Petri's Washington office.
The third place winner is Katy Kramlich, of Berlin High School. Her chalk pastel artwork, "Circle of Light," will be displayed in Petri's Fond du Lac office.
Judges for the contest were Annemarie Sawkins, Associate Curator of the Haggerty Museum at Marquette University in Milwaukee, and Graeme Reid, Assistant Director of the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend.
