WASHINGTON - At an awards ceremony in the U.S. Capitol Building May 19, Campbellsport resident William Volkert received a 2010 National Wetlands Award for Education and Outreach from the Environmental Law Institute.
"This award recognizes Mr. Volkert's exceptional and innovative contributions to wetlands conservation at the Horicon Marsh and beyond," said Rep. Tom Petri, who attended the event. "William Volkert, a wildlife educator with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, has provided more than 3,500 educational programs to 200,000 people, conducted more than 1,700 media interviews and programs, and provided training to 66 delegations of scientists from 41 countries. It's a record worthy of pride and recognition."
Volkert has worked for the DNR as a Wildlife Educator/Naturalist at the 32,000-acre Horicon Marsh for the past 25 years. He spearheaded the effort to create the Horicon Marsh International Education Center (HMIEC), a public-private effort between the DNR and the Friends of the HMIEC, a group which he helped form. Also, Volkert has made eight trips to Russia's Lake Biakal - the world's largest freshwater body - as part of a cooperative exchange with Russian scientists to develop educational materials and further public awareness of environmental protection.
The Environmental Law Institute says its mission is to protect America's wetlands. Its Wetlands Program researches and analyzes wetlands law and policy and fosters national dialogue among advocates and professionals from government, the private sector, and non-profit organizations about the most efficient and effective ways to govern wetland resources.
