Petri Warns About Stop Loss Pay Deadline

Rep. Tom Petri is trying to get the word out to current and former members of the armed forces whose tours of duty were involuntarily extended in Iraq and Afghanistan:  the deadline to apply for stop loss compensation by Oct. 21 is fast approaching.

During the height of the war in Iraq, the U.S. government instituted a "stop loss" policy which extended the tours of U.S. troops there for additional months past their originally scheduled return home.   The stop loss policy has also been used in Afghanistan to keep troops available when the supply of replacements has been stretched thin.

"As a result, a program was set up to help compensate the armed forces personnel and their families by giving a payment of $500 for each full or partial month that their term was extended," Petri said.  "That program is now being phased out, so to participate, people need to ask for the payment to which they are entitled by Oct. 21st of this year."

For more information or to submit a claim, please visit defense.gov/stoploss or contact Petri's office at 1-800-242-4883.

The text of Rep. Petri's recorded statement follows:

"It's important to get the word out that there is a deadline looming for people who have served in the military in the War on Terror.

"Many people who served, whether it's in the Guard or the Reserves or regular military, expected to serve for a fixed period of time, and that was extended to maintain the level of forces in the conflict.  As a result, a program was set up to help compensate the armed forces personnel and their families by giving a payment of $500 for each full or partial month that their term of service was extended.

"That program is now being phased out.  And so to participate, people need to ask for the payment to which they are entitled by Oct. 21st of this year.

"If you have any questions as to whether you or a member of your family would qualify for this program, or how to make sure you make the proper application by Oct. 21st, give my office a call at 1-800-242-4883 and we will be happy to work with you to make sure that if you are entitled to the $500 per month, that you get it."
