Ben Erickson, a junior at Neenah High School, has won a trip to Washington, D.C. in June to see his painting, "Reflections of the Season," displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building.
Erickson's painting was named the winner of Rep. Tom Petri's high school art contest at an awards ceremony held at the Windover Center for the Arts in Fond du Lac on April 17. Petri organized the competition as part of the 29th Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition. The "Best of Show" works of high school artists from congressional districts around the country will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
"This year we had 42 students participating from 13 high schools in the 6th District," said Petri. "I'm pleased to be part of the national congressional effort to showcase our next generation of artists."
Judging the art were Dr. Mary Hoefferle, Assistant Professor in the Art Education Department, UW-Oshkosh, and Andrew Redington, Associate Professor of Art at UW-Oshkosh and Gallery Director at the Allen Priebe Gallery at UW-Oshkosh.
Erickson will receive two round-trip tickets donated by a private business for a June 17 reception in Washington.
Breanna Coleman, a junior at Kiel High School, won a merit award for her work, "Our Youth," which shows two young children rendered in pen and ink with colored pencils.
Brianna Holliday, a junior at Berlin High School, won a juror's award for her acrylic painting of an abstract flower entitled "Something Bright."
