Matthew Griffith, a student at Sheboygan's North High School, has been named a co-winner in the 2010 "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band's Concerto Competition, an annual musical competition open to high school students across the nation. Griffith was selected from more than 120 participants in this year's competition. He will receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and will perform as a guest soloist on April 18 at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, VA, just outside of the nation's capital.
"He is clearly one of the top high school musicians in the country, having won not only the Marine competition but also several others," Rep. Tom Petri said during a meeting with Griffith in the Congressman's Washington office.
"And now he will get a 10-minute solo with the Marine Band. It's quite an accomplishment," Petri said.
Griffith, the winner of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Auditions in 2009, will perform his competition entry Carl Maria von Weber's "Concerto for Clarinet, Opus 26" on the clarinet. He is also the winner of the UW-Milwaukee Youth Wind Ensemble I Concerto Competition in 2009 and is Principal clarinet for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra's Chamber Orchestra.
"The President's Own" United States Marine Band concerto competition is held annually with support from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and the National Association for Music Education. The competition is open to high school woodwind, brass and percussion musicians in grades 9-12.
