Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels joined representatives of the Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin (MEUW) Tuesday to meet with Rep. Petri in Washington for a discussion of climate change legislation with an emphasis on protecting consumers and modifying proposed carbon allowance allocation formulas to ensure fairness for the Midwest, and to discuss pending rail legislation.
"We need federal help and federal regulation. Manitowoc has the largest publicly-owned utility in the state, and we need to protect that. It's a huge asset to Manitowoc, and we need our congressmen and senators to be onboard with us," said Nickels.
Petri commented, "There are a lot of things going on in Washington on the national agenda - cap and trade legislation, transportation legislation, and rules that affect the cost of getting coal to the power plant in Manitowoc and that could affect the health of our economy overall. So, Manitowoc, New Holstein, Menasha, a number of other communities in the 6th Congressional District, have municipal-owned utilities. They have done a good job, and I'm trying to help them succeed."
