WASHINGTON - Congressman Tom Petri (R-WI) says New Jersey Senators Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez should stop blocking Senate consideration of Robert Sturgell as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator. Nominated for the position by President Bush, Sturgell is currently FAA Acting Administrator.
Petri, the Ranking Republican on the House Aviation Subcommittee, said he is speaking in support of Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Republican Leader John L. Mica, who today has also asked the New Jersey Senators to let the nomination move forward.
"We have had an acting administrator since September. The FAA has several serious issues to deal with, and it needs a Senate-confirmed administrator, with the authority that conveys, to move forward at full strength," said Petri.
In February, the two New Jersey senators announced plans to block Sturgell's nomination because they are unhappy with a northeastern United States airspace redesign plan and other issues affecting New Jersey airports.
"Blocking consideration of Mr. Sturgell's nomination only takes time and energy away from the FAA's important work in these areas," said Petri. "It's time to let the FAA get on with its work."
