Rachel Huettl, a Berlin High School 11th grader, was among those honored at a March 25 reception in the Library of Congress. The ceremony was held to celebrate winners of the Council for Art Education's National Youth Art Month flag design program. Each participating state selected one design to represent that state, and Huettl told Rep. Tom Petri that "I was shocked when I won" because it had been her first attempt.
Huettl showed her flag to Petri and explained her design choices which include an outline of Wisconsin, a deer (the State Wildlife Animal), a dairy cow (the State Domesticated Animal), a wood violet (the State Flower), and a sugar maple (the State Tree).
Rep. Petri commented, "I think it's really wonderful that Rachel was able to win, and this is one of a number of opportunities that exist for students and for young people to show their creative talents and to win a trip to Washington or other recognition."
