Manitowoc Co. Trucker Named Road Safety Expert

WASHINGTON - Mark Hassemer of Francis Creek has been named one of 18 Captains of the 2009-2010 America's Road Team by the American Trucking Associations (ATA).

While maintaining their jobs as full-time professional drivers, the new America's Road Team Captains will travel the country promoting highway safety to the community, news media and public officials.  The Captains will address transportation and safety issues, speaking at community events and anywhere they can reach the motoring public to share safe driving tips and offer advice on how to safely share the road with tractor-trailers.

To be nominated to serve as a Road Team Captain, the candidates must be employed as a company driver or leased owner-operator by a full-dues-paying member of the ATA.  Each nominee must have an excellent safety record and demonstrate an ability to communicate a commitment to safety and professionalism.

Hassemer, an employee of Yellow Transportation, Inc., competed with 34 other finalists for the appointment announced Tuesday evening.  Prior to the announcement, he explained to Rep. Tom Petri, "I have 35 years driving experience, and I'm also involved in the Wisconsin Road Team in which I travel around to various high schools to do presentations to drivers education classes to educate them on how to share the road with large vehicles." (Audio of Mark Hassemer's comments)

Petri said, "We can really be proud that someone from Manitowoc County - Francis Creek - has devoted 35 years to his profession and now is a role model for others and is helping to educate young people and the public about the etiquette of good driving." (Audio of Rep. Petri's comments)
