Rep. Tom Petri reports that high school seniors interested in receiving the Congressman's nomination for appointment to the U.S. service academies should contact his office no later than Oct. 15.
"The service academies provide first class educations at no tuition cost to the students," Petri said. "In fact, Forbes Magazine recently named West Point the best college in the country."
The service academies are the Military Academy at West Point, NY; the Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO; the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY; and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, CT.
Petri notes that he does not currently have a slot open at the Naval Academy, but would like to hear from potential candidates in case the opportunity for a nomination comes up. He further notes that the Coast Guard Academy takes applications directly, and does not accept congressional nominations. However, Petri will be happy to supply application information to anyone who requests it.
"The service academies aren't for everybody," said Petri. "After all, these institutions provide the leadership of our armed forces. You need to be willing to serve your country. Accordingly, extra effort, ability and commitment are required of those who attend. Further, graduates must complete at least five years of active duty in the military (or work in the maritime industry, in the case of Kings Point)."
