Nadler Speaks Out on Need to Restore Access to U.S. Courts PDF Print

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, testified on the pressing need to restore pleading standards which allow reasonable access to federal courts. At a hearing of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts and Competition Policy, Nadler urged his colleagues to pass H.R. 4115, the Open Access to Courts Act of 2009, a bill he introduced last month, along with Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) and Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), in order to address the Supreme Court’s Ashcroft v. Iqbal decision, which has led to the premature dismissal of numerous civil rights, environmental and consumer protection cases.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), a longtime advocate on women’s health issues, lauded today’s successful passage of Rep. Wasserman-Schultz’s resolution on the importance of routine breast cancer screenings for women aged 40-49. He also reminded his colleagues of the necessity to pass his legislation, H.R. 995, the Mammogram and MRI Availability Act, which would require insurance companies that already cover diagnostic mammography and MRI to also cover life-saving screening mammography for women aged 40-49, and screening MRI for women at high risk of breast cancer.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) cheered the increase in funding for affordable housing and HIV/AIDS housing included in H.R. 3288, the FY 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act, which passed the House of Representatives. Nadler, joined by colleagues and the leadership of the Appropriations Committee, fought successfully to increase funding for these essential and chronically underfunded programs. The bill contains significantly more funding for housing programs than last year, including: $18.2 billion for tenant-based rental assistance; $8.5 billion for project-based rental assistance; $75 million for 10,000 Section 8 vouchers for homeless veterans; and, $335 million for the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program.
