Alabama Seniors

Congressman speaks with senior citizens in Alex City.As the baby boom generation begins to retire in greater numbers in the coming years, there will be more and more people drawing Social Security and Medicare and fewer paying into the system. Especially in this tough economic environment, that means Social Security and Medicare will face financial challenges sooner. Despite these challenges, one of Congress’ top priorities must be to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare for current and future generations.

Social Security:
Long ago I made a pledge that I would never vote to privatize Social Security, and I intend to keep that pledge. I believe Congress has a responsibility to make Social Security solvent for not only retirees, but for near retirees, and future generations.

Medicare:
Congress has the responsibility to keep Medicare affordable and easily accessible. I was proud to support the passage of the historic Medicare Prescription Drug program. While not perfect, this legislation was a good first step toward helping seniors have access to life saving medications at an affordable cost. I will continue to seek to support proposals that strengthen Medicare.
