Q:

Right now I can deduct business lunches and other business expenses. I'm still going to have to take clients to lunch, but now I'll have to bear the entire cost. Does the FairTax have an answer to this problem?

A:

Absolutely. The answer is that you won’t bear a penny more in costs under the FairTax then you do now. Today, you can deduct the lunch because it is a business expense. By “deduct” I mean that the dollars that you spend on the lunch are tax-free. Tomorrow, in a FairTax world, no business expenses are ever taxed. Do you lose the deduction? Absolutely. But a deduction is only a fancy way of saying “you don’t have to pay taxes on this business expense.” In a FairTax world, you never pay taxes on business expenses…so you never need business deductions. In a FairTax world you always purchase business items tax-free, and those tax-free purchases are never limited by “partial deductibility” or “depreciation schedules” as many business purchases are today. Rather than fear the loss of your tax deductions, you should celebrate being completely tax-free for the very first time.
