Federal surface transportation programs are currently authorized in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). SAFETEA-LU authorizes federal highway, transit, highway safety and motor carrier safety programs through Fiscal Year 2009. As the senior Northeastern Democrat on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, I am working with my colleagues on reauthorization legislation that will increase investment in core programs, including transit, rail freight, alternative modes of green transportation, and key programs vital to New York.

To ensure that the needs of local communities are met, the Committee is accepting public requests from elected officials for Member-designated projects which are critical to local districts, and which might not otherwise be funded. These projects must have tangible transportation benefits, they must meet eligibility criteria, and they must comply with transparency and accountability principles.
