New York, NY – U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, and Peter King, authors of H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, wrote to federal 9/11 Health Coordinator Dr. John Howard this week and urged him to develop autopsy guidelines that would help doctors better understand the effects of 9/11-related illnesses and track deaths that may have been caused by exposures to toxins released by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.  The federal government began work to develop such guidelines several years ago, but the guidelines were never completed.  A full copy of the lawmakers’ letter to Dr. Howard can be found below.

Nadler Pushes for Federal Answer to Ian’s Law to Protect Consumers from Possible Health Insurance Loophole PDF Print

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) took action to close a possible federal health insurance loophole allowing insurance companies to deny coverage to sick policyholders by canceling entire classes of insurance coverage.  Nadler sent a letter to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asking the agency about the potential loophole in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act so as to ensure that consumers are not dropped from vital coverage.  New York State recently enacted Ian’s Law, sponsored by State Senator Eric Schneiderman, to address this issue.  If HHS is unwilling or unable to make regulatory changes, Nadler will follow up with legislation, based on Ian’s Law, to get the job done.

Reps. Nadler, Frank, Baldwin and Polis Urge Strong Action to Prevent LGBT Youth Suicides PDF Print

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representatives Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Barney Frank (D-MA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Jared Polis (D-CO), leaders of the House LGBT Equality Caucus, formally requested assistance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to stem the occurrence of suicides among LGBT youth.  In response to recent highly publicized suicides across the nation, the Members sent a letter to Pamela S. Hyde, Administrator of HHS’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) urging immediate action by SAMHSA to better protect LGBT youth and prevent further tragedies.
