Letter to the Editor: Support FairTax to Revive Economy

The recent events in Postville have shown a mere snapshot of the number of people in Iowa who are here illegally and draw upon our resources without paying into our complex and biased income tax system. While removing this segment of our population, with its economic pros and cons, proves increasingly complicated, getting them to pay their fair share while they are here is extremely simple.

The Fair Tax is a bill before the House of Representatives that already seeks to simplify our tax code and spread the tax burden among all members of society, legal and illegal. The Fair Tax untaxes every citizen up to the poverty level and brings the wealth of those who can afford to get around our current income tax into the tax base. Through its simple method of taxation, the Fair Tax base is further increased each and every time those who work illegally spend their money. Furthermore, without being a legal citizen, they are not untaxed up to the poverty level, leaving a broader tax base for those of us who pay taxes under the current system. A larger tax base means we can each pay less in individual taxes to raise the same amount of government funding.

To help revitalize our economy, realize the many other benefits of a fresh tax system that America was designed for, and to help make sure that everyone in this state, both legal and illegal, are doing their part, support The Fair Tax.

FairTax Fact: The GAO (Congress's auditing branch) found that all of the exemptions, exclusions, and special favors in the current tax code drain federal receipts by $728 billion each year. That is almost as much as the nation spends on Medicare and Social Security combined and 60% more than the nation spends on national defense. The FairTax eliminates all deductions, credits, and carve-outs to ensure that everyone pays his or her fair share.
