Legislative Priorities

George's top priorities in Congress include strengthening the middle class and promoting economic growth to create good American jobs.

George has led the effort to give every American access to affordable, quality health care. In his role as the chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, he has worked to protect American workers and make college more affordable and k-12 public schools more successful.

He also represents the interests of the people of the 7th district of California, working to create a comprehensive, sustainable policy for California's Bay-Delta and create strong communities.

Education
In his role as chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, George is working make college more affordable and rewriting education laws and overhauling No Child Left Behind so that every single American child has access to a world-class education.

Strengthening the middle class and supporting people who work for a living is an important priority for George and for this Congress. George understands that there is no more important issue than creating good jobs here in America and in the Bay Area communities he represents. George has worked to increase the minimum wage to ensure every American who works hard for a living can earn a fair and decent wage.

Healthcare
In 2010, George worked with President Obama and his colleagues in the House and Senate to pass the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act so that every American has access to quality, affordable health care.

Energy and Environment
George sits on the House Natural Resources Committee, and has previously chaired that committee. George is known as a champion of the environment and is also an expert on California water issues.

Foreign Affairs
George has been a vocal critic of President Bush’s war in Iraq and in 2002 voted against the war resolution. He supports efforts to redeploy our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan in a way that is swift, safe and secure and protects both America’s soldiers and our long-term interests. George is working to achieve a two-state solution that ensures that both a democratic, Jewish Israel and a viable Palestinian state are able to co-exist peacefully.

Veterans
George is committed to ensuring that all our servicemembers and veterans who sacrifice for our country receive the benefits that they deserve. He worked hard to ensure the passage of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, which provides enhanced higher education benefits for servicemembers who served since 9/11. George is continuing to work to make sure that we provide quality health care, education, housing and job opportunities for our veterans.
