Dingell Helping Southeast Michigan Residents in Search for New Opportunities

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) took part in the Washtenaw County Employment Training and Community Services’ (ETCS) event “How to Get a Job in a Tough Economy, the Six Steps to a Career Transition” today.  He also handed out copies of the Displaced Workers’ Guidebook, a guide designed to help the State’s unemployed workers.  After the event, the Congressman made the following remarks:

“Congress will continue to do everything possible to create new jobs and opportunities for our people and to make it easier to transition for those struggling to find work.  While unemployment has dropped slightly in Michigan, the job market is still highly competitive, which is why I joined with ETCS to help those who have lost their jobs find their next career,” Dingell said.

“It is my hope that after the July recess, the Senate will finally take up the unemployment extension and send it to President Obama.  But my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are not willing to help the 1.7 million workers expected to exhaust their unemployment benefits by the end of the summer - 400,000 of which are in Michigan.  They continue rejecting job packages as well as unemployment insurance extensions.  That means we must get creative and find new ways give them a chance for a new life.  I applaud all of those who joined us today at this event.  They’ve never given up on finding a job and I won’t stop working to see that they get one either.”

Congressman Dingell has hosted a series of events for job seekers, including the Rehiring, Retraining and Relief Fair, two How to Get Hired Fairs, and a Job Seekers’ Boot Camp.
