Twinsburg FD gets federal grant to
rehire firefighters
U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette
(R-Bainbridge Township) today announced that the Twinsburg Fire
Department will receive $185,193 in federal funds from the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to rehire firefighters that
were laid off last summer.
Twinsburg sought the funding through
the DHS SAFER program - the Staffing for Adequate Fire and
Emergency Response program. The goal of the grant program is to
allow departments to have 24-hour staffing to so there is adequate
protection from fires and fire-related hazards, and funds can be
used in some instances to rehire firefighters who lost their jobs
due to the economy.
About $210 million in competitive
SAFER grants will be awarded, and Twinsburg will not have to
provide a local match to receive the grant.
"This is great news for the Twinsburg
Fire Department and the residents and businesses in the community
they protect," LaTourette said. "I congratulate Chief Racine
and Mayor Procop and know they're looking forward to bringing back
their firefighters."
