Congressman Edwards believes that the government should be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars and create budgets and pass legislation that are fiscally responsible.
Congressman Edwards was a co-sponsor of the Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and supports PAY-GO principles, which require the cost of any new legislation to be offset before passage. He believes that the federal government can best stimulate local economies with sound fiscal policies that lower the national debt and eliminate huge annual deficits. That is why Chet has received the "Deficit Hawk" Award from the non-partisan Concord Coalition.
Reducing the National Debt
Congressman Edwards thinks it is critical that Congress work on a bipartisan basis to reduce our $11 trillion national debt, which will lead to high interest rates and drive up the costs of building a business, buying a home or car. It is morally wrong to pass on to our children and grandchildren the burden of today's debt. Chet proudly supported the 2009 Budget Resolution, which would return the federal budget to balance in 2012.
During this time of economic insecurity, Chet believes that increasing government spending to continue to provide services to citizens is important, but once the economy is growing again, government should return to strict fiscally responsible spending to ensure that future generations are not strapped with excessive debt.
