Congresswoman Kilpatrick Hosts Congressional Conversation about Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer Survivor Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is Invited Guest

Detroit, MI — Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (MI-13) will host “Believe…Hope…Dream: A Congressional Conversation about Breast Cancer,” on Monday, July 12, 2010, from 12:00-1:30 p.m. The event will highlight efforts to raise awareness, promote early detection and prevention, and find a cure for the disease. The event will take place in the Green Lecture Hall inside Scott Hall at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Scott Hall is located at 540 East Canfield (at Brush). The event is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be provided. Free parking is available in Lot 75 on Canfield between Brush and St. Antoine.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20), a Member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, will discuss her battle with breast cancer. Other speakers include Ms. Maureen Keenan Meldrum, Chair of the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure; Dr. Gregory Auner, Professor of Electrical and Computer, Biomedical Engineering, and Materials Science at Wayne State University; and Dr. Wei-Zen Wei, a breast cancer researcher and Associate Director for Basic Research at the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

“I am committed to educating everyone about this disease and to supporting efforts to eradicate breast cancer,” said Congresswoman Kilpatrick. “I am pleased to welcome Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz to the 13th Congressional District. We will continue working together to improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families, to support breast cancer research, and to find a cure for this disease.”

Congresswoman Kilpatrick is committed to improving health care coverage for prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer; securing funds for cancer research; and increasing awareness and education about cancer. She has sponsored or co-sponsored at least 48 bills intended to positively impact the lives of cancer patients. As Michigan’s sole Appropriator, she has secured millions in federal funding to support cancer research. Congresswoman Kilpatrick recently received an award from the Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition for her work fighting breast cancer. She is also a recipient of a Heroes of Breast Cancer Leadership Award from the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
