It is an honor and privilege to serve seniors in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. You helped build our region and our country. Seniors have worked all their lives to make sure that our families, communities, and country are strong. You have earned the nation’s respect and deserve to live the balance of your lives in dignity and to reap the benefits of Medicare and Social Security programs. Rest assured that I will continue fighting for you in Congress. Know that I am working to strengthen these programs to make sure that you have access to quality health care, affordable prescription drugs, and secure retirement benefits.

Seniors and Health Care Reform

For more than 60 years, America has been talking about the need for health care reform. While we have debated, deliberated, and delayed it, rising health care costs have crippled our families, seniors, businesses, and economy. Americans want and need health care reform now. That’s why I am working with President Obama and Congress to fix what’s broken in our health care system and to strengthen what’s working. Standing Strong for Seniors

I have sponsored or supported legislation aimed at improving the quality of life for seniors.
  • I introduced the Caring for an Aging America Act, which is designed to prepare the health care workforce to better serve the increasing number of older adults.
  • I worked to get language in a bill to increase the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) outreach to seniors regarding the switch to digital television
  • I voted in support of the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2007 cut the cost of prescription drugs for America’s senior citizens and people with disabilities.
  • I voted in support of the Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act, which was designed to give about 4.5 million families in Michigan $3.8 billion in tax rebates. I worked with agencies such as the IRS and AARP to make sure that seniors and others in the 13th Congressional District received the money they were due by making sure volunteers visited senior buildings, community centers, and other organizations in the District to assist people in determining their eligibility and completing the tax forms needed to receive rebates.
Senior Services

I meet regularly with senior with citizens to discuss issues, including prescription drugs, healthcare, Medicare, and Social Security. During a recent series of Senior Summits, I provided information about legislation affecting seniors and shared some of the resources available to seniors in southeast Michigan.
