Congresswoman Kilpatrick Celebrates Bone Marrow Awareness Month



Congresswoman Kilpatrick helped kick off the inaugural African American Bone Marrow Awareness Month during a press conference at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Representatives from A Bone Marrow Wish Organization recognized the Congresswoman for introducing legislation aimed at helping increase awareness and bone marrow donors.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick Secures Funds for the Detroit Institute of Arts



Representatives from the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) thanked Congresswoman Kilpatrick for securing $750,000 in federal funding for the facility. Funds will be used to replace the DIA’s roof and protect treasured art collections.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick Applauds Announcement of Federal Partnership with DDOT



Congresswoman Kilpatrick joined U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and state and local leaders in announcing the federal government’s partnership with the Detroit Department of Transportation on the Woodward Light Rail Project. The collaboration will help move the initiative that will provide light rail from downtown Detroit to Eight Mile Road forward. Several participants, including Senator Debbie Stabenow, Governor Jennifer Granholm, and Mayor Dave Bing, thanked the Congresswoman for her leadership and determination in bringing rail transportation to the region. The Congresswoman secured more than $6 million in federal funding for the Woodward Light Rail Project.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick and Under Secretary Westphal Honor Veterans and Veterans Service Organizations



Congresswoman Kilpatrick and the Under Secretary of the Army Dr. Joseph W. Westphal honored Michigan veterans and Veteran Service Organizations during a ceremony at the Coleman A. Young International Airport in Detroit. The Congresswoman and the Under Secretary expressed their appreciation to our nation's veterans. They also presented representatives from Veterans Service Organizations with an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of their service to Michigan’s veterans. Congresswoman Kilpatrick read to students at Friends School to emphasize the importance of reading and the role it plays in enhancing language, writing, and other skills. The Congresswoman’s visit demonstrated her support of the National Education Association’s signature program, Read Across America. Now in its thirteenth year, this year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read. The Library of Congress Center for the Book is a longtime Read Across America partner. Congresswoman Kilpatrick Announces 12 Michigan Cities to Receive ARRA Funds to Address Housing Crisis



Congresswoman Kilpatrick joined HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and state and local officials in announcing that 12 Michigan cities will receive over $220 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding to address the negative effects of abandonment and foreclosure in neighborhoods. The proposal includes cities most affected by the decline in manufacturing employment, elevated foreclosure rates, access to credit and household, and population loss. Targeted areas include two cities in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District—Detroit and Wyandotte—as well as Highland Park, Hamtramck, Flint, Saginaw, Pontiac, Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and Benton Harbor.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick Holds Town Hall Meeting on Health Care Reform



Congresswoman Kilpatrick held a town hall meeting to update residents of the 13th Congressional District on the health care reform bill being discussed in Congress. Congresswoman Kilpatrick recently hosted a town hall meeting to provide residents of the 13th Congressional District with a legislative update on the health reform bill being discussed in Congress. The Congresswoman and members of her legislative staff shared information about the provisions in the bill with participants. Representatives from several local organizations talked about the importance of health care reform and its impact on the communities, families, small businesses, mental health services, and the uninsured and underinsured. Panelists included Dr. Herbert Smitherman, Assistant Dean of Community and Urban Health at Wayne State University; Mr. Paul Propson, Executive Director of Covenant Community Care; Ms. Roberta Sanders, Executive Director of New Center Community Mental Health Services; Ms. Lydia Gutierrez, President of Hacienda Mexican Foods; Ms. Marge Faville, President of SEIU Healthcare Michigan; and Sister Mary Ellen Howard, Executive Director of the St. Frances Cabrini Clinic of Most Holy Trinity Church.

Participants traveled from all parts of the district, including the Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods, Lincoln Park, River Rouge, Wyandotte, and Detroit, to learn more about health care reform and how it will affect them. Attendees also had a chance to ask questions of Congresswoman Kilpatrick and the panelists.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick Hosts “Careers in Health Care” Job Fair



Congresswoman Kilpatrick sponsors job fair to give constituents access to more than 1,400 jobs and education and training programs. Congresswoman Kilpatrick hosted a “Careers in Health Care” Job Fair at River Rouge High School. More than 700 people attended the event to learn more about employment, educational, and training opportunities in the growing health care industry.

The Congresswoman’s goal was to bring people who need jobs and employers who need to fill open positions together. More than 20 vendors from local health organizations, colleges and universities, and training centers participated. Representatives from major health systems, including Beaumont Hospital, Botsford Hospital, the Detroit Medical Center, Henry Ford Health System, and St. John Health System, were on hand to talk to participants about the positions available in their organizations. Representatives from local colleges, universities, and training programs such as the Michigan Public Health Institute, Oakland University, the University of Phoenix, Wayne County Community College District, and Wayne State University shared information about degree, certification, and training programs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health care industry will generate three million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016, more than any other industry. Congresswoman Kilpatrick Helps Dedicate Rosa Parks Transit Center



Congresswoman Kilpatrick helped dedicate the new Rosa Parks Transit Center. The Congresswoman secured $8 million in federal funding for the 25,700 square foot facility, which is the first of its kind in Detroit, Southeastern Michigan’s largest transit hub, and the state’s largest international intermodal transit center. The Congresswoman joined other dignitaries, including Mayor Bing, at a ceremony celebrating the opening of the new center. She and Mayor Bing unveiled a custom-designed bronze plaque honoring Rosa Parks. The plaque will be mounted in the lobby of the center. (07/13/09)

Congresswoman Kilpatrick Supports Legislation to Increase America's Energy Independence



Congresswoman co-sponsored H.R. 1835, the New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act (NAT GAS Act). The bill would quickly reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign energy while simultaneously reducing transportation fuel costs, greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, and urban pollution where dense vehicular fleets are prevalent. Legendary energy expert T. Boone Pickens commended Congresswoman Kilpatrick and other lawmakers for their efforts to make domestic natural gas a more accessible alternative. (07/08/09)

Congresswoman Kilpatrick Hosts a Town Hall Meeting with Dr. Ed Montgomery



The Congresswoman hosted a town hall meeting with Dr. Ed Montgomery, White House Director of Recovery for Auto Workers and Communities. The purpose of the meeting was to provide local elected officials and business and community leaders with the opportunity to discuss their concerns about issues such as housing, transportation and infrastructure, economic growth, and youth development with Dr. Montgomery and other U.S. officials. Presenters included Nathan Conyers; Linda Smith, executive director of U-SNAP-BAC; Ed Lazar of the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce; George Jackson, president of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation; and Angela Reyes, executive director of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation.
